Extended Service Contracts

A turnkey way for retailers to add value

As spa prices climb and consumers spend more time researching purchases, retailers are looking for easy ways to add value beyond the product itself. One option some dealers are introducing is the extended service contract.

Today’s buyers are making larger investments and have more purchasing options than ever before — from online, in-store and road shows, says Joseph Byrd, founder of Extended Service Contracts LLC, which offers the Extended Spa Care program administered by the largest warranty provider in the industry.

“Customers shop in-store, online and direct to the manufacturer,” Byrd says. “It’s become incredibly competitive.”

At the same time, spa ownership has become more expensive.

“In 2015, we could sell a starting spa for $3,000 or $4,000,” he says. “Now, $6,000 is the start.” As a result, customers are more likely to ask how they can protect that investment beyond the manufacturer’s warranty and get more value from their hard-earned dollars.

Meeting customer expectations — with clear expectations

Extended service contracts have become a standard part of the buying experience for big-ticket items — from smartphones to major appliances — because they give customers peace of mind beyond the manufacturer’s limited warranty. For spa buyers investing $6,000 or more in a product they expect to enjoy for a decade-plus, that same reassurance is increasingly important.

Byrd points out that coverage under the Extended Spa Care program is for mechanical and electrical breakdown — such as pumps, motors, topsides and lighting — and is subject to the specific terms and conditions of the service agreement. These are among the most commonly repaired components in spa products, and second-time spa owners in particular tend to ask about protection plans. Those terms exclude accidental damage, cosmetic issues (such as shell damage), pre-existing conditions and damage from misuse, mishandling or natural disasters. Full details — including eligible components, exclusions and claim procedures — are provided with each contract.

“If you can demonstrate that this is a popular, high-value add-on and say yes to protecting their investment — within the scope of what the contract actually covers — you’re creating an incredible amount of credibility for your business and real value for the buyer,” Byrd says.

For him, that credibility is just as important as the operational benefits. A customer who feels supported after the purchase is more likely to return for future products, accessories and referrals.

How the process works

1. ENROLL: The retailer registers for the program through the dealer portal.

2. SELL: The dealer receives brochures, acrylic displays and other point-of-sale materials. The service contract is added as a line item on the sales invoice or presented using the program marketing materials.

3. REGISTER: After the sale, the dealer enters the customer’s information and spa serial number into the dealer portal.

4. RELAX: Extended Service Contracts LLC processes the registration and a welcome packet is mailed to the customer within 30 days, including terms and conditions, coverage information and required disclosures. Claims and service coordination are handled by the program administrator going forward.

Keeping it simple

For many dealers, the challenge is finding new ways to serve customers without creating more administrative work — something that has historically been a pain point with extended service contracts.

“They don’t need another complicated program,” Byrd says.

Extended Spa Care was designed to simplify the process. The program is administered by the one of the nation’s largest extended warranty providers, which handles regulatory compliance, customer documentation and claims fulfillment. This allows dealers to offer extended coverage without building their own warranty infrastructure or managing complex legal paperwork at the point of sale.

“It’s completely turnkey,” Byrd says. “The retailer registers it at the point of sale. Extended Service Contracts LLC handles the rest.”

The model can be especially appealing to smaller retailers.

“The smaller the dealer is, the more the owner is doing everything,” Byrd says. “They don’t necessarily have additional staff, so we wanted to make this as tremendously valuable to them as it would be to a bigger organization.”

Byrd says dealer concerns often center on who ultimately services the contract. Rather than relying on the retailer, customers contact the program administrator directly for claims. The company operates a U.S.-based call center and coordinates service nationwide through licensed technicians.

Dealers can offer three-, five- and 10-year protection plans (as well as swim spa options), with coverage beginning at delivery and extending beyond the original manufacturer’s warranty.

Supporting dealers without adding complexity

Customer reassurance is only part of the appeal. Retailers also value offering protection without taking on inventory, freight, storage or additional overhead.

“While spas carry the normal cost of goods from manufacture through to sale, this program gives dealers a way to deliver protection without those associated costs,” Byrd says.

Because the program carries no cost of goods related to inventory, freight or storage, dealers retain a substantial portion of the contract revenue. Program materials show that, on sample pricing, dealers can achieve margins in the range of 60% or higher. The plans can also be presented alongside financing programs, accessories or other offers to enhance the overall package shown to the customer.

Beyond warranty coverage

For Byrd, the biggest benefit may not be the contract itself but what it communicates to the customer.

“Remember — that place had everything,” he says, describing the impression retailers want to leave after a sale. This increases the likelihood of repeat visits and referrals.

Whether customers purchase the protection plan or not, Byrd believes offering it helps position a dealership as a full-service resource. For retailers looking to deliver more value without adding inventory or operational complexity, that combination of customer support and simplicity is what makes the program appealing.
