The 4-1-1 on Bio Ouster

The water care solution that removes grime from hot tub pipes

Even the best maintained hot tubs need a strong cleaning on the inside from time to time, as contaminants such as gunk, bacteria, mold, surface grit, oils and other hard to remove pollutants can build up.

That’s where Bio Ouster comes in. David Wood, CEO of Ouster Water Solutions, explains Bio Ouster as a two-part water care system that removes the existing bio-matter, then reduces the reoccurrence of buildup on an ongoing basis.

“Part one is the Bio Ouster Hot Tub Restoration Cleaner, which cleans interior pipes to get the hot tub plumbing system to like-new condition,” Wood says. “Our product uses a proprietary additive to scrape the pipes clean and then pulls the gunk out of the plumbing system using a thick foam.”

Add 1 ounce of Bio Ouster cleaning gel to the hot tub and each dose will treat an up to 600-gallon spa. After 15 to 20 minutes, the foam is full of contaminants (slime, mold, organics, etc.) and the hot tub should be drained and refilled with fresh water.

Part two is using the Bio Ouster Weekly Maintenance, formulated to minimize the buildup of biomatter and contaminants once the hot tub pipes are clean. Once a week, add 1 ounce per 100 gallons to the hot tub with the regular sanitizer to keep the tub running at maximum efficiency.

Norm Coburn, president of New England Spas in Natick, Massachusetts, says one of the biggest issues in the business is getting an infected tub clean.

“Not only is it effective, but it is also quick in doing its job,” Coburn says. “A water change can occur in as little as 15 minutes after treatment. Consumers consistently rank water care maintenance as the top reason for either not buying a hot tub in the first place or getting rid of their existing hot tub. This reduces time necessary to achieve great water quality. The spa water will look, feel and smell better.”

While most hot tub sanitizers are excellent at killing bacteria once suspended in water, over time bacteria will naturally adhere to the interior walls of the plumbing pipes, secreting a thin biomatter membrane (resembling a honey-like substance) that is nearly impossible to penetrate with chlorine.

“This condition will quickly lead to cloudy water, odors, higher chemical usage and potentially more serious unhealthy spa water,” Wood says. “The old thinking was to simply drain the hot tub to solve the problem, but this strategy actually could even make the real underlying problem worse.”

Wood says Bio Ouster compliments any existing sanitizing and chemical regimen used by consumers.

“It locks in pH to keep the water balanced, which reduces the need and costs of extra chemicals,” Wood says. “It keeps the water quality in great shape, even if the homeowner isn’t as diligent as they should be with following their manufacturer’s instructions. That boosts ownership satisfaction.”

David Rempfer, president of Sunset Spas, with seven locations throughout Arizona and Nevada, says Bio Ouster helps the water stay crystal clear.

“If someone gets on the program, their tubs will stay cleaner and the overall experience will be better, not to mention the ease of maintenance,” Rempfer says. “Retailers will make good money by offering it, too, as the customers will be happy because it’s a great product.”

The company also offers a dealer program that’s marketed to generate incremental revenue and complement the existing major chemical lines sold in store.

“The Bio Ouster dealer program is unique because it isn’t a one-size fits all program,” Wood says. “Instead, our approach is to offer multiple programs to fit the retailer’s unique business and profit objectives. We offer retail sales, weekly service/valet, drain and clean and auto-ship directly to consumers using our warehouses and private label solutions.”

Dealers may appreciate the company’s commitment to maintain strict MAP pricing and prevent Bio Ouster from being sold online. Additionally, authorized dealers can offer a lifetime jet warranty to consumers who purchase a Bio Ouster program with new hot tubs.

“Any dealer who has been in the industry for a while will tell you it doesn’t matter the quality of the hot tub, bells and whistles or therapy benefits sold to the consumer,” Wood says. “If the spa water quality is bad, your buyer satisfaction is dead in the water. As the saying goes, ‘Water chemistry issues may be the customer’s problem — but that won’t stop them from blaming you (the dealer).’ Bio Ouster offers an affordable water care solution that will help keep the customer happy.”
