Dana Hyde and Charles Koncewicz, the husband-and-wife team behind CK Spas, have built a thriving business rooted in hard work and adaptability.

Koncewicz, a former residential mover turned spa transporter, began refurbishing and selling used spas out of his home.

Before long, his garage was overflowing with spas, even spilling out into the driveway. At the urging of Hyde, his then-girlfriend, he rented a storage unit to house his growing inventory. As the business expanded, he upgraded to a larger unit with power and heating.

Hyde took on the marketing and advertising side of the operation by posting ads, taking photos and creating promotional materials.

In 2017, a new opportunity arose when a friend was looking to downsize their business space. Koncewicz saw the growth potential and brought the idea of opening a storefront to his wife.

“At first she laughed,” he says. “But after talking about it, we decided to go for it and took over his lease.”

As they took the bold step of opening their store, Hyde found herself selling spas. Their initial venture, which started with selling used spas, has since evolved into a boutique business offering high-end Canadian-made spas, swim spas, water care products, Covana covers and more.

For Koncewicz, the appeal of running CK Spas lies in the freedom it provides. “It has taken a lot of sweat and tears, but it’s all paid off,” he says. “I can run my own schedule and plan my days myself. Working with my wife is definitely a bonus.”

Hyde agrees, saying, “I’m passionate about the industry and about being my own boss.”

Her enthusiasm is fueled by the relationships she has built.

“My favorite part about this industry has been all the people I have met, connected with and learned from,” she says.

Looking ahead, Hyde and Koncewicz have plans to expand CK Spas by increasing the square footage of their showroom floor, enabling them to showcase all swim spa models in one space and provide customers with a comprehensive shopping experience. They also hope to consolidate into a single, larger building to streamline their workflow and support continued growth.

Both Hyde and Koncewicz hope to leave their mark on the industry. He is passionate about improving customer service in Quebec, particularly in an industry where big-box stores often prioritize quantity over quality and leave customers to fend for themselves, he says.

Hyde is dedicated to increasing the presence of women in the hot tub industry and hopes to engage with more women’s groups.

“I’d like to be remembered as a passionate woman in the industry, always ready to chat and share my knowledge,” she says.

Wherever the path leads, this team is in it for the long haul.

“I’m here until I retire,” Koncewicz says. “Then maybe my son will want to take over, though I hope he finds something he is truly passionate about.”
